As part of one of the biggest capital campaigns in the history of the YMCA of Greater Winston-Salem, Kernersville Family YMCA received an eleven thousand square feet, eight lane indoor pool addition with support spaces, a three thousand, five hundred square feet Youth Center, and an outdoor mini-water park. The project was a community effort and the objective was to create a community pool to serve Kernersville’s neighborhoods and schools. The addition was completed in July, 2000 and has begun to fill its role in serving as a community facility with swim lessons and meets, water exercise programs and year round water recreation.
The regulation size indoor pool designed by Hine’s Aquatic Engineering features eight lanes with starting blocks and a handicap ramp. EBA worked with Hines Aquatic Engineering to design the surge tank and pool mechanical areas. The structure is block with brick veneer and large aluminum window units. Locker rooms are provided with toilet and shower facilities. The indoor deck can house bleachers for spectators for swim meets. A sunbathing deck can be accessed from the indoor pool. The program also includes administrative offices and a community entrance to the pool facility separate from the main YMCA member entry.
The Youth Center is used as a multipurpose room during school hours and later in the day is used for after school care. In the summer time, the space accommodates day campers and activities. The room can be subdivided into two smaller conference rooms by a folding wall that bisects the space.
The outdoor mini-water park features include a tumble-bucket, lemon drops, tee cup, starburst, raindrop, and shower tunnel. The water park has a zero entry and is 18” deep at its lowest point. EBA designed the shape of the water park for which Hines Aquatic Engineering provided the design. EBA designed the surrounding deck and sunbathing area as well as outdoor locker rooms, family changing rooms and mechanical and pool filter rooms.
